FAQ

Questions we get asked most

Everything from patch tests to parking, plus the detail on each service, 48 questions in all. If what you need is not here, call us and we will answer it properly.

General questions

What makes your salon organic and sustainable?

We work with NATULIQUE, Pure and Davines: low-tox lines made with certified organic ingredients. Our commitment extends beyond products. We implement eco-friendly practices throughout our salon, from energy-efficient lighting to sustainable waste management. More about how we work.

Are organic hair colours as effective as traditional colours?

Absolutely. Our organic colours deliver vibrant, long-lasting results whilst being gentler on your hair and scalp. They contain naturally derived ingredients and exclude harsh chemicals, providing beautiful colour without compromising hair health. See organic hair colour for the detail.

How do I book an appointment?

The quickest way is to book online. You can also call us on (08) 9381 5766, email erinmorganhair@bigpond.com, or send us a message through the contact page. We recommend booking in advance, especially for colour services and weekend appointments.

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your first visit begins with a thorough consultation to understand your hair goals and assess your hair's condition. We'll discuss suitable treatments and products, then create a personalised plan. Please arrive with clean, dry hair if possible, and help yourself to an organic coffee or a herbal tea while you settle in.

Do I need a patch test before colouring?

Yes, if it is your first colour service with us. A patch test needs to be done at least 48 hours before your appointment and takes a couple of minutes, so drop in any time we are open.

Where do I park?

There is metered street parking along Hay Street and free and paid parking in the surrounding Subiaco side streets. Subiaco train station is a short walk away if you would rather not drive. Full directions are on the contact page.

Booking and appointments

How do I know which service to book?

If you are not sure, book a consultation. It is the appointment to choose when you want a change but cannot name it. We look at your hair, talk through the options and put a plan together with no obligation to book anything on the day.

Do you publish prices?

Not on the website. Hair varies enormously in length, thickness and history, and a price list would either be misleading or so full of caveats it stopped meaning anything. Call us on (08) 9381 5766 or ask at consultation and you will get a real number for your hair.

Can I combine services in one appointment?

Yes, and it is usually the efficient way to do it: a treatment goes on while colour processes, and a cut follows straight after. Tell us what you want when you book so we set aside the right amount of chair time.

How long will my appointment take?

A cut and finish is around an hour. Colour is two or more. Balayage runs three to four hours, longer on dark or very long hair. We will give you a realistic estimate when you book rather than a hopeful one.

Booking with a stylist

Can I request a particular stylist?

Yes, and we would encourage it once you have found someone you click with. You can pick your stylist when you book online, or say who you would like when you call.

What if my usual stylist is not available?

Everyone here works to the same standards and the same low-tox product lines, and we keep notes on your colour formula and cutting history so another stylist can pick it up without you having to explain from scratch.

Who should I see for a first colour appointment?

Any of our colour specialists. If you are not sure, book a consultation and we will put you with whoever is the best fit for what you are after. It costs nothing and saves a lot of guesswork.

Low-Tox Colour questions

Will low-tox colour cover my greys properly?

Yes. Grey coverage is the most common thing we are asked about, and NATULIQUE guarantee full coverage, and it holds on resistant, wiry regrowth as well as anything conventional we have used. Coarse white hair sometimes needs a slightly longer development time, which we build into the appointment.

Can you fix colour done somewhere else?

Usually, but corrective work is the one service we will not quote over the phone. Come in for a consultation so we can see the hair, check its condition and be honest about whether it is one appointment or two. Rushing a correction is how hair breaks.

Do I need a patch test?

If it is your first colour with us, yes, at least 48 hours before your appointment. It takes two minutes and you can drop in any time we are open.

How often should I come back?

Regrowth is typically every four to six weeks, foils every eight to twelve. Balayage stretches furthest of all. We will give you a realistic interval for your hair rather than the shortest one.

Specialist Lightening questions

How long does balayage take?

Allow three to four hours for a first appointment, longer on dark or very long hair. It is not a service to squeeze into a lunch break. Book a morning or use our Wednesday late night.

How often will I need it redone?

Most clients come back every three to four months, sometimes with a toner in between to keep the blonde honest. That is the main reason people move from foils to balayage.

Can I get balayage on dark brown or black hair?

Yes, though not to a pale blonde in one visit if you want to keep the hair intact. Dark hair usually takes two appointments spaced a few months apart. We will be straight with you about that at consultation rather than after.

Will it damage my hair?

Any lightening changes the hair. Using gentler low-tox products, stopping at the right point and finishing with a treatment is how we keep that change to something your hair recovers from. If your hair is already fragile we will say so and suggest a treatment plan first.

Grey Blending questions

What is the difference between grey blending and grey coverage?

Coverage paints the grey out completely, so you get a solid, uniform colour and a root line to maintain every four to six weeks. Blending softens the grey into the hair around it, so it reads as dimension rather than being hidden. Blending grows out without a line and needs far less upkeep, but it does not give you an all-over solid colour. Which is right depends on how much grey you have and how much maintenance you want.

How much grey can you blend?

Blending works best up to roughly half grey, and it depends on where the grey sits as much as how much there is. Beyond that, blending starts to look like a lighter version of what you already have, which some people love. We will be straight with you at consultation about what your hair will give you.

Can you help me grow out my colour and go grey naturally?

Yes, and it is one of the things we are asked most. Done well it is a staged process rather than one appointment. We blend the line, let it move down and blend again, so there is never a point where you have an obvious two-tone head of hair. It takes patience, but you are not hiding at any stage of it.

I have never coloured my hair. Is grey blending a good place to start?

It is the gentlest place to start. A NATULIQUE Liquid Colour tones and glosses without committing you to a root line, so if you decide colour is not for you, there is nothing to grow out. A lot of first-time clients start here.

How often will I need it done?

Usually every six to ten weeks, which is a good deal less often than a full coverage regrowth. Because there is no hard line, going a little over does not leave you stuck.

Liquid Colours questions

What is the difference between a liquid colour and a permanent colour?

Permanent colour deposits and covers: it gives you a solid, uniform result and a root line to maintain every four to six weeks. A liquid colour tones, glosses and blends. It evens the colour and adds shine without laying down a solid root, so it grows out softly. If you want complete grey coverage, permanent is the right answer. If you want tone, shine and far less upkeep, this is.

Will it cover my greys?

It blends them rather than covering them, so they read as brightness and dimension through the hair instead of being painted out. That works beautifully up to roughly half grey. Past that it starts to look like a lighter version of what you already have, which some people love. We will be honest at consultation about what your hair will give you.

How long does it last?

Usually six to ten weeks. Because there is no hard line, going a little over does not leave you stuck the way an overdue regrowth does. Home care makes a real difference to how long the tone holds, and we will tell you what to wash it with.

Can I have it over colour that was done somewhere else?

Usually, and it is often the quickest way to fix a tone that has gone brassy or flat. Come in for a consultation first so we can see the hair and check its history: box colour and henna both change the plan.

I have never coloured my hair. Is a Liquid Colour a good place to start?

It is the gentlest place to start. It tones and glosses without committing you to a root line, so if you decide colour is not for you, there is nothing to grow out. A lot of first-time clients start here.

Specialist Cutting questions

Do you cut curly hair?

Yes. Curly hair is consulted on dry so we can see the curl pattern before anything is wet, and cut to work with the shrinkage rather than being surprised by it.

What happens in a cutting consultation?

We start with your hair dry and unwashed, because that is the only way to see how it really falls: where it parts, where the growth patterns push it, and how much weight it is carrying. We talk through what you want, what your hair will do, and how much time you give it in the morning, then agree the shape before anything is cut. It is not a formality; it is where the cut is actually decided.

How often should I get a cut?

Six to eight weeks for a short shape that relies on precision, ten to twelve for longer hair where you are mostly keeping the ends healthy. Growing it out is not a reason to skip cuts: split ends travel upward.

Can I bring a photo?

Please do. It tells us more in five seconds than five minutes of description. We will be honest about which parts of it will work on your hair type and which will not.

Organic Hair Treatments questions

What is bond repair, and do I need it?

Colouring, lightening and heat all break bonds inside the hair. That is the damage you feel as roughness, breakage and hair that will not hold a style. Bond repair rebuilds those bonds rather than smoothing over them. If you lighten, straighten or use heat regularly, it is worth doing; if your hair is simply dry, a conditioning treatment is the cheaper and better answer. We will tell you which you are at assessment.

Can a treatment fix split ends?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. A split end can be temporarily smoothed but the only fix is cutting it off. What a treatment does is stop new ones forming as quickly.

How long does a treatment take?

Twenty to thirty minutes on its own. Added onto a colour or cut appointment it usually costs you no extra chair time at all, since it goes on while you are already processing.

How often should I have one?

Every colour appointment if you lighten your hair, every second or third otherwise. Through summer, more: sun and salt water undo a lot.

I have a flaky, itchy scalp. Can you help?

Often, yes. It is frequently a reaction to something in conventional shampoo or colour, and moving to low-tox products plus a scalp treatment clears it up. If it looks like a medical condition rather than a product one, we will say so and point you to a GP.

Hair Extensions questions

Will extensions damage my hair?

They can, if they are too heavy, badly placed or left in too long. Applied at a sensible weight and maintained on schedule, they should not. We would rather put in fewer pieces and keep your hair intact.

How long do they last?

The hair itself lasts a long time with good care. The application needs moving up as your own hair grows, typically every six to ten weeks depending on the method and how fast you grow.

Can I still swim and go to the gym?

Yes, with a bit of care. Tie it up for the pool, rinse the chlorine and salt out properly, and dry the join rather than leaving it damp.

Can I book extensions for a specific date?

Yes, but come in for the consultation well ahead, because the hair has to be ordered and matched. Two to three weeks before the date is comfortable, more in wedding season.

Styling & Upstyles questions

How far ahead should I book for a wedding?

As early as you can. Saturday mornings through spring and autumn book out months in advance. Bridal parties in particular need the diary blocked well ahead.

Do I need a trial?

For a wedding, we strongly recommend it. For a race day or a party, usually not. A trial lets us test how your hair holds and gives us photographs to work from on the day.

Should I wash my hair before an upstyle?

Day-old hair holds better than freshly washed. If you want it washed here, book it in, and do not turn up with it wet.

Can you do the whole bridal party?

Yes, subject to the diary. Get in touch with the date, the number of people and the time you need to be finished by, and we will tell you honestly whether we can do it properly.
